The descendants of James Gallant, an American Revolutionary War patriot, will have a DAR grave marking and dedication ceremony in his honor at 10 a.m. July 31 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 2123 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill. A reception will follow the ceremony. The event is open to the public and sponsored by Catawba Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Elizabeth Gordon Bradley Chapter NSDAR and Sarah Polk Chapter NSDAR.
Clover's First UMC preschool program has openings
First United Methodist Church Preschool, 124 Bethel St., Clover, is now enrolling children who will be age 3 or 4 before Sept. 1 for the 2008-2009 school term. A few 4-day spots are available which are from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. The preschool program focuses on the kindergarten readiness skills for the Clover school district. Music, art and Spanish and the Christian curriculum Godly Play are included in classroom activities.

NAACP chapter offering two scholarships for graduates
The Rock Hill chapter of the NAACP is offering two Dr. James H. Goudlock scholarships for high school seniors who will be attending college in the fall. Applications are available at the NAACP office at the Freedom Center, 215 E. Main St., Rock Hill. Deadline is July 31. For details, call 366-2184.
There's grant money available for York County artists
Visual artists and filmmakers living in York County are eligible to apply for grants of up to $5,000 through the Regional Artist Project Grant Program, managed by the Arts and Science Council.
The grants provide individuals with project support for the enhancement of artistic development. Grant awards may be used for projects such as attendance at workshops or master classes or the purchase of supplies and materials needed to create new work.
Free grant information sessions will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Charlotte Museum of History, 3500 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Arts Council of York County, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill.
Artists must have lived in York County for one year. Residents living for at least one year in the North Carolina counties of Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Rutherford and Stanly also are eligible to apply.

Covenant Presbyterian men will hold barbecue sale Saturday
The Covenant Presbyterian Men of the Church will have a barbecue sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church, 1830 Celanese Road, Rock Hill. Smoked barbecue by the pound is $8; plates, which include half a pound of barbecue with beans, slaw and bread are $6; and a sandwich with slaw is $3.
